Thermostat settings are mostly dependent on personal preference and what you think to be home comfort for you and your family. However, if you talk to one of our technicians about how you can use your thermostat to save on your annual
air conditioner service appointment, they will probably provide a couple things to keep in mind this winter.
- While it’s nice to constantly be saving money because you have your thermostat at a lower setting, it could actually be costing more if you set it too low. The best spot is turning your thermostat back 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit/5-7 degrees Celsius for 8 hours, as it can save you between 5 and 15 percent on your energy bills each year, according to Energy.gov.
- If your thermostat is set too cold or you completely shut off your air conditioner, you could risk freezing your pipes. This, of course, can create huge problems for all of the uninsulated pipes in your home. Most kitchen and bathroom pipes aren’t insulated, so if they freeze, they could burst and cause significant water damage to your home.
- Condensation is also a threat when you have your thermostat set too low. Your air conditioner service technician can help point out areas where this condensation could show up, so when you decide on a temperature, you can be sure it’s not going to potentially cause damage to any of the wood or electronics inside your home.
Your home comfort is arguably one of the most important things to stay current with this winter, as you’d imagine it should be.
