It’s the time of year we’re thankful for our AC. There’s nothing much more relaxing than walking into a nice, cool house after being out in the sweltering heat. If you find that your system is not getting your home cool enough, there could be a lot of reasons. It might be abnormally hot outside, or may be clogged filters or dirty coils, or even your thermostat. But, it might be that the system is low on refrigerant. There are some warnings you can look out for to let you know that your refrigerant is running low and that it’s a good idea to call in a professional for air conditioner service.
Higher Utility Bills
An air conditioner that is missing refrigerant will have to run longer to try to cool the interior. This results in higher utility bills. If you’ve seen abnormally high bills it could be time to call someone in to check out your air conditioner.
Ice Buildup or Water
If you observe any ice on your exterior AC unit, there’s a chance that there’s problems. When you’re low on refrigerant, your system’s evaporator coil will get too cold and the precipitation around your refrigerant line will freeze. This could lead to compressor issues. If your compressor becomes damaged, and it’s not under warranty, it’s could be more cost effective to replace the whole outside unit.
Your Home Isn’t Cool
If your system is taking longer than it usually does to cool your home or if it’s not getting to the temperature set on your thermostat, your best bet is to have your system looked at. There are a number of things that might be taking place that a technician would be able to diagnose.
